Take the time to unplug devices such as your televisions, DVD players, VCRs, radios, and lamps. Want an alternative? Try using devices and appliances already built in with energy saving features, or simply plug everything into a power strip so it is easy and quick to switch off when everything is not in use.

After you flush the dye away so it doesn't stain, head to the hardware store for a replacement flapper assembly (then go to thisoldhouse.com for instructions on how to install it.) 1. Everyone wants their homes to look their best, and the kitchen is no exception. When redecorating, try a few energy saving and eco-friendly home decorating tips. Not only will your space look its best, but you'll be saving the environment along the way.

2. Before you run your dishwasher, make sure it is full to minimize any waste. (Dishes are not the only things you can clean in the dishwasher). Also once the dishwasher has ran, turn off the drying cycle to let the contents air dry. This simple act can save up to 1,200 watts per dry cycle.

3. Have you ever thought about turning down your hot water heater

4. When cooking be mindful of what pots and pans you use to prepare your meals. Pots that are too small for the burners can cause you to use more energy that you realize. Using the microwave to heat something instead of the oven, and the use of glass pans can also help reduce you energy use.

5. Unplug any appliances when they aren't in use. Coffeemakers and toasters are perfect examples of what to unplug. Check out others- 25 appliances you can unplug to save electricity.

6. When it comes to appliances, another step to take is to make sure they are not hogging energy. Appliances can be responsible for around 18% of your energy bill. The biggest culprit? Your fridge. For any appliances that are more than 10 years old, it is suggested that you take the step and purchase a new, energy efficient model, ones marked with the "Energy Star" logo. This can save from 10%-50% less energy and water used in your household.

Alternative Energy and Other Green Solutions for Your Garage

1. If you have the means, you should really consider buying a hybrid or electric car. While hybrids have benefits, the very best car you can have in your garage is an electric vehicle (or EV). These cars run solely on electricity. They are controlled by an electric motor powered by rechargeable battery packs. Click here to find out more.

2. If buying a new car is not in your budget, there are many alternative solutions that you can use to make your car use less gas, and therefore be more eco-friendly.

3. Having a sustainable garage does not just have to include making green choices for your vehicle! There are many different options for those who would like to have power-tools and other equipment that is better for the environment. A few of these options include reel or electric lawnmowers, cordless chain-saws, and battery-operated drills

4. Try buying refurbished models of tools for your garage. It's like large-scale recycling!

5. If you know you don't have any reason to actually own your own power-tools, the best thing you can do is rent or borrow them. If you have good relationships with your neighbors, ask them if you start a tool swapping program with them. Each family can buy one or two eco-friendly power-tools and then the entire cluster of neighbors can share with one another.

Otherwise, renting is a great form of green tool usage. Not only is this option saving the planet, but it also saves money. Rather than owning a set of tools that you will hardly use and that will take up space, you can rent the tools you need when you need them, from rental companies--like your local home improvement store, such as Home Depot or Lowes. Here is a list of 8 tools you should rent, not buy.

6. Your garage flooring can also go green if you use recycled vinyl tile

7. Last but not least, there are green garage doors. These doors have recycled wood, are sturdier, add insulation value to your garage and house, and--of course--help the environment!

5. If your lawn is smaller, you can upgrade from a gas powered lawnmower to an electric or manual model, which can save in fuel costs and emissions.

6. Also, by strategically placing shade trees around your yard, you can have a positive effect in your home's energy use by blocking unwanted sunlight.
